Encrypted Messaging Setup

Not all messaging apps are equal. I help you understand which ones are genuinely private, set them up with the right settings, and know when to use each one for different types of client communication.

Questions

Is WhatsApp secure enough?

WhatsApp has end-to-end encryption for messages, which is good. But it's owned by Meta, backs up to iCloud or Google Drive by default (where messages may not be encrypted), requires your phone number, and has poor privacy in other ways. For casual client communication it's fine. For anything sensitive, Signal is better.

What's the difference between Signal and Telegram?

Signal is genuinely private — all messages are end-to-end encrypted by default, no chat history stored on servers, and the organisation is non-profit with no data monetisation. Telegram is only encrypted in "Secret Chats" — regular chats are stored on Telegram's servers. Telegram is better for channels and large group communication. Signal is better for private one-to-one messages.

Do I need ProtonMail?

If you use a standard Gmail or Hotmail for client communication, those emails are readable by Google and Microsoft. ProtonMail is encrypted and based in Switzerland, with much stronger privacy protections. For any sensitive communications — screening, negotiations, personal details — ProtonMail is worth having.

Can police access encrypted messages?

Signal cannot hand over message content to law enforcement because they don't have it — messages are only decrypted on your device, never on their servers. Telegram can hand over data from regular (non-Secret Chat) conversations. This is a genuine difference that matters in serious situations.

Should I use encrypted messaging with all clients?

Not necessarily all clients — many clients won't want to download Signal just to contact an escort. But for ongoing client relationships, for any discussion involving personal details, and for any communication you'd prefer didn't exist in a regular chat log, Signal or ProtonMail is the right choice.
