Having managed dozens of eBay accounts and built multiple Shopify stores, I get asked this question constantly. The honest answer? It depends. But let me break down exactly when to use each platform.

eBay: The Marketplace

Best for: Sellers who want built-in traffic, beginners, product resellers, anyone who wants to start selling immediately.

Pros:

  • Millions of active buyers already searching and buying
  • No website to build or maintain
  • Easy to list products in minutes
  • Built-in trust and buyer protection
  • Auction format can drive higher prices for rare items
  • Cons:

  • Listing fees and final value fees (10-15% of sale price)
  • You're competing on the same page as identical products
  • Limited branding — your store looks like every other eBay store
  • Algorithm changes can wipe out your visibility overnight
  • You don't own the customer relationship
  • Shopify: Your Own Store

    Best for: Brands, businesses wanting long-term growth, anyone wanting customer ownership, higher margin products.

    Pros:

  • Complete control over design, branding, and customer experience
  • You own the customer data (emails, behaviour, purchase history)
  • No direct competition on your pages
  • Lower transaction fees (2% + payment processing)
  • Huge app ecosystem for reviews, upsells, email marketing
  • Builds a real business asset you can sell
  • Cons:

  • You must drive your own traffic (SEO, ads, social media)
  • Monthly subscription (£29-£299+)
  • Takes time and effort to build
  • More technical setup required
  • My Recommendation

    Start with eBay if: You're new to selling, have limited budget, or want to test products quickly. eBay gives you immediate access to buyers.

    Build on Shopify if: You're serious about building a brand, have products with good margins, and are willing to invest in driving traffic.

    Best strategy: Do both. Use eBay to test products and generate immediate revenue while building your Shopify store for long-term growth. That's exactly what I help my clients do.
