Mac vs PC for Small Business: An Honest Comparison

I work on both platforms every day. I've set up hundreds of Mac and Windows machines for small businesses across London. Here is my genuinely unbiased view on which you should buy.

The Case for Mac

Reliability and longevity

Macs consistently outlast equivalent Windows machines. A MacBook from 2018 still runs the latest macOS with no slowdown. A Windows laptop from 2018 is often struggling. The total cost of ownership over 5+ years can actually favour Mac.

Security

Macs get far fewer viruses and malware than Windows machines. This isn't just about market share — macOS has stricter app sandboxing and system-level protections. For a small business without dedicated IT support, this matters enormously.

Integration with iPhone/iPad

If your team uses iPhones (which most people do in the UK), the Mac ecosystem is seamless. AirDrop, Handoff, iMessage from your laptop, Universal Clipboard — these genuinely save time.

Best for: Creative professionals, businesses in the Apple ecosystem, anyone who values low maintenance.

The Case for PC

Cost

A capable Windows business laptop costs £400-£700. The cheapest MacBook is £1,099. That's a real difference, especially if you're equipping multiple staff members.

Software compatibility

Some industry-specific software only runs on Windows. Accounting packages, specialist CRM systems, CAD tools, certain government portals — check before you switch.

Repairability and upgrades

Windows laptops are generally easier and cheaper to repair. More repair shops stock parts. RAM and storage are often upgradeable (saving money vs. buying a whole new machine).

Best for: Businesses on a budget, teams needing Windows-specific software, businesses with 5+ staff to equip.

The Honest Verdict

For most small businesses, both work perfectly well for day-to-day tasks: email, documents, spreadsheets, video calls, web browsing. The choice often comes down to:

  • Budget: Windows wins on upfront cost
  • Longevity: Mac wins over a 5+ year window
  • Software requirements: Check your specific tools first
  • Personal preference: Whichever you're comfortable with, you'll be more productive
  • My recommendation: if you can afford it and don't have Windows-specific software requirements, a MacBook Air (M-series chip) is the best all-round business laptop on the market right now. If budget is the priority, a Lenovo ThinkPad or Dell Latitude are my go-to Windows recommendations.
