What to Do When Your Computer Won't Turn On

A computer that refuses to start is one of the most stressful things that can happen — especially mid-workday. Before you assume it's dead, work through this checklist. In my experience fixing hundreds of machines, over 70% of "dead" computers have a simple, fixable cause.

Step 1: Check the Basics First

It sounds obvious, but you'd be surprised:

  • Is it plugged in properly? Try a different wall socket.
  • Is the power strip switched on and working? Plug in a lamp to test it.
  • For laptops: is the battery completely flat? Leave it charging for 15 minutes before trying again.
  • Check the power cable at both ends — laptop charger connections work loose over time.
  • Step 2: Listen and Look

When you press power, what happens?

  • Nothing at all — likely a power supply, battery, or charging issue
  • Fans spin but no display — GPU, RAM, or monitor connection issue
  • Beep codes — the BIOS is telling you something specific (count the beeps and search the pattern)
  • Starts then immediately shuts off — overheating or failing power supply
  • Step 3: For Desktops — Check Internal Connections

If you're comfortable opening the case:

  • Reseat the RAM sticks (remove them, clean the contacts, push them back in firmly)
  • Make sure the GPU is fully seated in its slot
  • Check all power cables are connected to the motherboard
  • Look for any capacitors that look swollen or burnt
  • Step 4: For Laptops — Force a Power Reset

  • Remove the battery if it's removable
  • Hold the power button for 30 seconds
  • Reconnect just the charger (no battery) and try again
  • If you have a non-removable battery, hold power for 30 seconds anyway — this drains residual charge
  • Step 5: Try an External Monitor

If your laptop turns on (you can hear fans) but the screen is black, connect an HDMI cable to a TV or monitor. If the image appears externally, your laptop screen or its cable has failed — easily repaired.

Step 6: Boot Into Safe Mode

If Windows starts loading but crashes, try safe mode:

  • On most machines: hold F8 during startup (or hold Shift while clicking Restart)
  • Safe mode loads minimal drivers — if it works in safe mode, a driver or software is causing the crash
  • When to Call for Help

If you've worked through all of the above and the machine still won't start, it's time for professional diagnosis. The most likely culprits at that point are: failed power supply (desktop), failed motherboard, dead SSD, or corrupted Windows installation — all of which I can diagnose and fix.

Data recovery is also possible in most cases, even if the computer itself is beyond repair. I have a 95%+ data recovery success rate. Message me on WhatsApp and I'll give you an honest assessment.
